How Underglaze Works
Underglaze is a key technique that allows Studio Ekta to achieve vivid, lasting colour in ceramics. Unlike surface glazes that sit on top, underglaze is applied directly to the clay body before firing. This method locks in colour beneath a clear glaze layer, preserving brightness and detail.
Here’s how it works in simple terms:
Application
Underglaze comes in liquid, powder or pencil form and is painted or sponged onto the bisque-fired pottery. This stage allows for precise designs and layering of colours.
Firing
After application, the piece is coated with a transparent glaze and fired at high temperatures. The heat fuses the underglaze with the clay, making the colours permanent and resistant to fading.
Benefits
This technique produces sharp, vibrant colours that do not run or blur. It also allows for creative freedom in patterns and textures, essential for Studio Ekta’s expressive style.
Underglaze pottery offers a durable, colourful finish that enhances the emotional impact of each piece.
